Ping Pong Table Height

Ping Pong or commonly known as table tennis is a game played by two or four players hitting a ball and passing it from one end to another using paddles. The game is played on a hardwood table, which is divided by a net post.

It is a well-loved sport all over the world that can be played either indoors or outdoors, which started as a parlor game in the 1800s for anyone with the right playing equipment.  It was adapted from lawn tennis during the winter season when players need to play indoors. But there are also claims that it started when a certain grandfather was looking for ways to entertain his grandchildren during Christmas season.

The game became truly popular and has continually increased over the years, that everybody wants to have access to the game’s equipment more and more.

This article aims to give basic information about the game to include the correct equipment and space requirements necessary to play. But first, how does one play?

The Game Mechanics

The Ping Pong player’s overall target is to win a match by getting 15 points and if you are 2 points ahead of your opponent. A point is earned when the opponent cannot hit the ball over the net onto the other side of the table or if the ball touches the net during service. After one completed match, the players switch courts. If one player wins both matches, he is declared the winner. In case of a 15-15 tie, each server only serves one point before switching service. But in case of one match won per player, a third match will break the tie. But up to 5 points only.

The Ping Pong Ball

The Ping Pong ball is hollow and made up of celluloid. The ping pong ball has a diameter of 40mm and weighs 2.7g. The standard game rules say that the ball should bounce up to 24-26cm when dropped from a height of 30.5cm. At present, ping pong balls are made up of polymer instead of celluloid having a color of either orange, yellow or white. However, recreational versions include Ping Pong balls of a lot of other different colors. In fact, a number of parlor games have come out over the years that use Ping Pong balls.

The Ping Pong Paddle

The Ping Pong paddles are assembled using laminated wood. It is then covered with rubber on one or both sides depending on the player’s choice. The racket is 10.6 cm long and has a weight of 180g. Its height and width are 19.36cm and 15.24cm respectively.

The Table

The Ping Pong table is 2.74m (9 ft.) long, 1.525m (5 ft.) wide, 76m high, being the standard measurement specified by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). It is divided into two halves by a net made up of nylon, with a height of 15.25cm (6 inches).

Tabletops are usually made of either plywood, particle-board, plastic, metal, concrete or fiberglass and can vary in thickness between 0.47 to 1.2 inches. But the highly recommended game tables have wooden tops, made from a hardboard composed of wooden chips called Masonite. The chips are treated with steam so that they form long fibers and the fibers are used in making the boards. ITTF only approves game tables that are made of wood. The rest of the parts are made of aluminum or aluminum alloy. The boards are either painted or have a plastic layer on top. This ensures the quality of bounce.

The surface of a Ping Pong table is almost always green or grey, but for the interest of television coverage and make them visually better in the screen, there were experiments with different colors during the 1990s. The matte blue color was finally chosen as it complemented the usual reddish color of the floor coloring during tournaments.

It is important to choose the correct color of the tabletop surface in accordance with the surroundings where the table will be placed. It needs to provide a good contrast between the floors, walls and all the colors in the playing area.

Interestingly, in 2016 the ITTF voted to amend this as it was noted that 8% of the male population have problems distinguishing green and red. The ITTF approved nowadays have a dark, matte color.

When the table is not being used, it is important that it is properly covered. The quality of the game table cover can either lengthen or shorten its lifespan. This is especially important for tables used outdoors.  First and foremost, the tables need to be stored in a cool place to prevent warping of its surface. It is also preferred that it generally in one location as moving from different climatic conditions – hot, cold, damp – can have a detrimental effect on it. There will also come a time when the top surface loses its adhesion, causing the ball to skid instead of bounce properly. This can be corrected and will need an expert to repair.

Ping Pong Game Space Requirement

The correct Ping Pong space during playing should provide the right amount of area where players can move freely, and with all the necessary equipment nearby.

However, for professional playing, there are specified minimum space requirements. These vary depending on the level of the competition.

For international events, including Olympic Games or World Championships, it shouldn’t be small than 14m x 7m. For tournaments on the national level, it should be 12m x 6m. For local leagues or tournaments, it should not be smaller than 9m x 5m. But for practice play or coaching, a small space may be used of not less than 8.5m x 4m. In fact, there are Ping Pong tables that can be folded in half for a playback feature for this purpose.

Recreational Tables

There are other game tables that do not fit the standard category in terms of dimensions and features – i.e. 7ft x 3.5ft. These fall under the Recreational Table category and are also available in the market.

Conclusion

Whether you play professionally or for fun only, there are Ping Pong tables that will fit your style and purpose. We only provided you with the basics. Choosing what will work for you is clearly a personal choice.
